Gospel Martial Arts Union
26/Oct/09
Just got back from Indianapolis and the Gospel Martial Arts Union National Conference. I taught a couple of seminars, spoke at the banquet, and enjoyed the hospitality of Dr. Johnny Russell and all his instructors there at the GMAU HQ. But the most humbling event was my induction as just the third chairman of this international ministry. Dr. Totingham and Dr. Haralson have graced me with the confidence to grow the organization that they began over twenty years ago (see the gallery page for a photo).
Some of you may know that back in the early eighties I did my master’s thesis at seminary on the topic of “The Spiritual Aspects of the Martial Arts.” That began an academic journey that has led me to study the history and philosophy of the martial arts especially as it relates to my faith as a Christian. This is just one more step on that trek. I am excited about what the future holds and look forward to seeing what God can do with our growing community of believers in the arts.

Totally Tae Kwon Do
14/Oct/09
Some of you may know I have been contributing to a fairly new web based magazine called Totally Tae Kwon Do. Go to www.totallytkd.com. The first seven issues have been downloaded 122,000 times! Pretty good readership. And speaking of readers, they recently did a survey of their subscriber’s favorite books on Tae Kwon Do. The top book was “A Killing Art,” which I have recommended to you before. But I was surprised to see my own latest book, “The Complete Guide to American Karate and Tae Kwon Do” take the number 10 spot.
In fact, I’ll quote Stuart Anslow, the magazine’s editor. “It is a credit to get one book listed in any of the top twenty so far, exceptional to get two, but one of the magazine’s supporters from day one and [a] regular writer for the magazine’s not content with having a book listed in last month’s Top 20, has got not one, not two, but three books in this month’s charts as well. Many congratulations Master Keith Yates. I think we are privileged to have you writing for the magazine.”
Check it out not just for my articles but there is some other interesting material there as well. Mr. Anslow has spent a lot of time on this endeavor. I know how much time it takes to just keep a website up to date, let alone a whole “digizine.”
